GMC’s Bold Crusade: Urgent Action Against Unsanitary Restaurants to Protect Public Health | Guwahati News Exclusive
Guwahati’s restaurant and eatery sector is currently under rigorous scrutiny by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). Since October, the GMC has sealed nine restaurants due to non-compliance with food safety norms, particularly over severe hygiene lapses. These establishments have been accused of preparing and serving food under conditions that could severely threaten public health. Reports have emerged of eateries using contaminated water and even instances where rats were found in food preparation areas.
Mrinal Borah, GMC’s joint commissioner, emphasized the critical health hazards posed by these practices, reiterating the corporation’s commitment to ensuring strict adherence to cleanliness standards across the city’s eateries. GMC plans to conduct inspection drives in over 200 restaurants holding trade licenses. Establishments found violating these standards have been subject to hefty fines and closure until issues are resolved.
Consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant, ensuring that they only patronize establishments that maintain proper hygiene and to report any infractions to the GMC. This operation underscores a broader initiative by the GMC to safeguard public health and improve food safety across Guwahati.
In related news, amidst significant administrative changes, Dr. NV Sundarachary has been appointed as the new principal of Guntur’s Govt Medical College. Additionally, the Goa Medical College has increased its stipend for MBBS interns by Rs 10,000 to a total of Rs 30,000 per month, following committee recommendations. Meanwhile, in central Kerala, the food safety department’s task force has intensified its crackdown on catering units, following a spike in food poisoning reports, resulting in fines and suspensions for infractions. These moves reflect a concerted effort across regions to enhance food safety and administrative efficacy.
