Ahead of Chhath Puja, the Indian Railways is ramping up its services to accommodate the surge in passengers traveling for the festival. Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar announced an inspection of facilities, stating that 195 special trains will be operated over a 13-day period from the Delhi area. On Sunday, 70 trains were in operation from Delhi, including 16 special ones, with four additional unannounced trains to handle the increased demand. Kumar reported high passenger satisfaction with these arrangements.
In anticipation of the travel rush, Indian Railways is not just limiting the extra services to Delhi but is rolling out special trains nationwide to ensure safe and convenient travel. Executive Director of Information and Publicity, Dilip Kumar, stated that over 160 special trains were running on Thursday, with more than 170 trains operating on Sunday to cater to those heading to their hometowns for Chhath Puja.
Special arrangements have been made at key stations including New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Ahmedabad, Surat, Baroda, Mumbai, Bandra, Vijayawada, Vishakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru. The Railways has deployed Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railways Protection Force (RPF) personnel to manage crowds, and Rail Sewaks are available on-site to offer assistance to passengers.
To enhance passenger experience, additional coaches have been added to the special trains, and hundreds of CCTV cameras have been installed to monitor station activity. Kumar assured travelers that tickets can be booked through both online and offline modes, and those without confirmed tickets can access unreserved seating. Measures have also been implemented to restrict unnecessary movement, with Rail Sewaks on hand to assist senior citizens and those with physical challenges.
Chhath Puja holds significant cultural importance, especially in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. The Railways’ efforts aim to ensure the safety and comfort of travelers during this major festival.
