Heroic Security Forces Triumphantly Thwart Bold Cross-Border Smuggling Attempt
Imphal: In a significant operation, security forces have once again thwarted a cross-border smuggling attempt of areca nuts in Manipur, marking the second such interception in under 48 hours. Acting on precise intelligence, the Assam Rifles mobilized a unit to disrupt the illicit activity. Collaborating with Manipur Police, they set up an early morning checkpoint on November 1 in Khuga village, Churachandpur district.
At the checkpoint, the joint team successfully intercepted a convoy comprising four vehicles. During a detailed inspection, they uncovered 350 bags of areca nuts cleverly concealed beneath covers and cartons. The operation resulted in the arrest of all seven individuals aboard the vehicles, and the confiscation of the contraband along with the goods carriers.
The seized areca nuts, estimated to be worth Rs 2.4 crore in the grey market, and the apprehended suspects were subsequently handed over to the divisional forest officer in Churachandpur for further legal proceedings.
This incident follows a previous seizure by the Assam Rifles on October 30, where 70 sacks of areca nuts were confiscated at Moreh in Tengnoupal district, near the Indo-Myanmar border.
These operations underscore the continued efforts by security forces to combat smuggling activities in the region.
