Alarming Surge: Taiwan Reports Escalating Chinese Military Activity Amid U.S. Election Tensions
Taiwanese Coast Guard personnel were observed working off the coast of Nangan Township in the Matsu Islands on October 15, 2024, just a day following the “Joint Sword-2024B” military drills conducted by China near Taiwan. According to Daniel Ceng from AFP and Getty Images, Taiwan’s defense ministry reported on Sunday that it had detected 35 Chinese military aircraft, including fighters and bombers, flying towards Taiwan’s south en route to exercises in the Pacific. This marked the second consecutive day of such military activities reported by Taiwan.
China, which considers Taiwan a part of its territory despite opposition from Taipei’s democratically elected government, routinely operates its military near the island to assert its sovereignty claims. The Chinese defense ministry has not commented on these missions, reported shortly before Tuesday’s U.S. presidential election.
Under U.S. law, the United States is obligated to support Taiwan’s self-defense, with recent arms sales totaling $2 billion, including a missile system, further straining U.S.-China relations. From 9 a.m. on Sunday, Taiwan’s defense ministry detected 37 Chinese military aircraft — consisting of J-16 fighters, nuclear-capable H-6 bombers, and drones — with 35 of them entering the area to the island’s southwest, south, and southeast, moving into the Western Pacific for long-range training. Taiwan responded by deploying its forces for monitoring.
A day prior, the ministry noted China’s “joint combat readiness patrol” involving warships and aircraft near Taiwan. Last month, China’s extensive military exercises near Taiwan were perceived as a warning against separatist actions, sparking condemnation from Taiwan and the U.S. Beijing disapproves of Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, who has been in office since May and is labeled a “separatist” by China. President Lai asserts that Taiwan’s future should be determined by its own people and has offered talks with Beijing, which have been consistently declined.
