Tragic Srinagar Gunfight: Brave CRPF Troopers and Police Officers Injured in Intense Clash
Srinagar, Nov 2: A gunfight erupted in Srinagar’s Khanyar area on Saturday, injuring two CRPF personnel and two policemen, as security forces engaged in a standoff with terrorists they had cornered, officials reported. The encounter commenced after intelligence reports indicated the presence of militants, prompting the launch of a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the downtown district. As forces approached, the entrenched militants opened fire, leading to a skirmish that marked the first significant conflict in this area in over a decade. Historically, this region was a separatist stronghold, though security measures had substantially reduced militant activities here in recent years.
This unexpected resurgence of violence in Khanyar challenges the perception that Srinagar had been successfully cleared of militant threats. Concurrently, in Anantnag’s Shangus-Larnoo area, two militants were neutralized by security operations near Halkan Gali. The violence follows an incident on Friday in Budgam’s Mazhama village, where terrorists injured two non-local laborers, Sanjay and Usman, from Uttar Pradesh. Both victims are currently hospitalized in stable condition.
Last month was also marked by brutal attacks by militants. Six infrastructure workers and a local doctor were killed in Gagangir, Ganderbal district, while working on a tunnel intended to boost local economic development by enhancing the Srinagar-Sonamarg road. This violence extended to the Botapathri area of Gulmarg in Baramulla district, where terrorists claimed the lives of three army soldiers and two porters.
These incidents highlight a troubling pattern of targeted violence that presents a significant challenge for regional security forces, amid efforts to maintain stability and foster economic growth. Security operations continue in these regions to eliminate remaining militant threats. IANS
