Meghalaya Takes Bold Stand Against Fake Lakadong Turmeric: A Triumph for Authenticity and Trust!
In a bid to protect its prized Lakadong turmeric, the authorities in Meghalaya have issued a strong warning against the illegal marketing of this spice from areas outside its designated geographical regions. The move follows the recent Geographical Indication (GI) certification of Lakadong turmeric, intended to safeguard its authenticity. Granted in March 2024, the GI tag restricts genuine production to the East and West Jaintia Hills districts and was awarded under certification number 741 to the Lakadong Turmeric Cooperative Union Limited in Jowai.
Vijay Kumar, the Commissioner and Secretary of Meghalaya Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, emphasized the illegality of growing and selling Lakadong turmeric outside its designated area. As demand for this premium spice grows both nationally and internationally, reports have emerged of counterfeit products falsely branded as Lakadong turmeric. Investigations by the agriculture department have revealed instances of turmeric grown outside Meghalaya being marketed under this prestigious name.
Kumar highlighted that these fraudulent practices mislead consumers and damage the reputation, quality, and unique characteristics of Lakadong turmeric. Such actions consequently lead to financial losses for farmers who rely on the exclusive qualities of the region’s turmeric. The GI certification protects Lakadong turmeric, granting exclusive usage rights to registered proprietors and authorized users, as stipulated under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999. Those found violating the regulations face potential legal action under sections 38, 39, and 40 of the act.
The protection of the traditional cultivation area is crucial for preserving authentic production methods and safeguarding the livelihoods of local farmers. By maintaining the spice’s integrity, Meghalaya aims to ensure that Lakadong turmeric retains its distinctive qualities, valued by consumers worldwide.
