Joyful Unity: Kangpokpi Embraces ‘Chavang Kut for Christ’ with Heartfelt Prayers for Kuki-Zo Harmony
The Kuki-Zo community in Manipur is set to commemorate Chavang Kut with a significant change in its traditional festivities, transitioning from a vibrant post-harvest celebration to a solemn day of prayer and unity. Formerly characterized by lively dances and music, Chavang Kut last took place in 2022, capturing the essence of harvest joy. However, due to the tragic incidents of May 3, 2023, and in line with customary wartime traditions, this year’s festival was suspended.
In a bid to preserve the festival’s essence of strength and community, the Committee on Tribal Unity has transformed the event into “Chavang Kut for Christ.” This year’s iteration will focus on prayer and reflection, emphasizing the resilience and solidarity of the Kuki-Zo people. The observance will be held across four locations in the Kangpokpi District: Brigadier M. Thomas Ground for the Gunhom region, Gelnal Playground for the Twilang region, Saikul Playground for the Saikul area, and Leimakhong Bazar for the New Keithelmanbi, Kangchup, and Leimakhong regions.
Preparations, led by Kuki-Zo Nampi Taokhomna with support from the Committee on Tribal Unity, are well underway. The community’s commitment is evident in their devoted efforts, including late-night work at Brigadier M. Thomas Ground and other designated locations, to ensure a meaningful and impactful observance of Chavang Kut.
