Exposing the Truth: Congress Slams ‘One Nation, One Election’ as an Empty Catchphrase | MorungExpress
New Delhi, October 31 (IANS): Congress Lok Sabha MP Tariq Anwar has criticized the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, labeling it as a mere “catchphrase” that contradicts India’s constitutional framework. Anwar emphasized that while India has effectively implemented nationwide schemes such as GST for taxation, a unified power grid, a nationwide ration card system, and health insurance under Ayushman Bharat, the push for simultaneous elections lacks genuine intent and alignment with constitutional principles.
He noted that the concept resurfaces whenever elections are imminent, pointing out the recent staggered elections held in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana, followed by Jharkhand and Maharashtra. “All four could have been conducted together, but it appears there is a lack of real intention,” Anwar commented. He stressed that this idea is just a slogan that conflicts with the diversity of political circumstances in each state, as considered by the Constitution’s architect, Babasaheb Ambedkar.
Anwar also addressed the Prime Minister’s remarks on Article 370, where PM Modi claimed that the provision had prevented the complete implementation of Ambedkar’s Constitution across India. Anwar countered this by explaining that Article 370 was enacted under unique historical circumstances when Kashmir, led by Sheikh Abdullah, opted to join India. The agreement with Raja Hari Singh included this provision to respect the region’s distinct situation, a context Anwar suggests the Prime Minister overlooks.
Through his critique, Anwar urges a more nuanced understanding of India’s constitutional history and state-specific political dynamics, suggesting that the emphasis on ‘One Nation, One Election’ overlooks these complexities for the sake of simplicity in electoral management. This ongoing debate highlights the tension between national integration efforts and the preservation of India’s federal structure.
