Terrifying Yet Thrilling: The Top 10 Countries That Scare Drivers When Renting a Car Abroad
Driving in a foreign country can offer a serene journey through rural landscapes or a stressful navigation of urban chaos, depending on the destination. A recent survey reveals that India is the most nerve-wracking country for drivers, scoring 7.15 out of 10 for driving anxiety. Conducted by Scrap Car Comparison with Prolific, the survey polled 2,000 drivers from nations including the UK, US, Canada, and others. Notably absent were participants from Asia and South America, even though countries like Vietnam and India are known for complex traffic scenarios involving diverse vehicles and even livestock on the roads. Three Indian cities, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Pune, feature heavily in the TomTom Traffic Index’s top 10 for congestion.
The survey’s rankings are driven by perceptions of drivability, not road safety statistics. Mexico leads North America at 11th place, while South Africa ranks highest among participating countries at 21st. In Europe, Turkey ranks 12th, closely followed by Hungary. The Netherlands is deemed the least stressful for drivers, scoring 4.41, reflecting its orderly traffic conditions.
Drivers find switching to the opposite side of the road, as in the UK and former British colonies, most daunting. Erratic driving behavior and the fear of breaking local laws are major concerns. Additionally, 30% of drivers worry about accidents and language barriers. The results underscore the varied challenges and comforts of driving abroad.
