Sikkim CM Enthusiastically Welcomes North East Vision 2047 Team, Paving the Path to Transformative Regional Growth
In a significant move toward regional development, the Chief Minister of Sikkim welcomed the North East Region Vision 2047 team in Gangtok, underscoring the state’s commitment to strategic long-term growth for the North East. During this meeting, the state took the opportunity to honor key contributors to its development, notably appointing Dr. Mahendra P. Lama as Emeritus, Chief Economic Advisor to the chief minister, acknowledging his invaluable contributions.
The Central government has entrusted the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (NEDFi) with the development of the Vision 2047 plan, a comprehensive roadmap aimed at transforming the North East Region (NER). This initiative is being spearheaded by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is working in close collaboration with state governments to develop a robust and timely strategic framework.
The Vision 2047 plan places a strong emphasis on enhancing regional connectivity, bridging infrastructure gaps, and boosting regional trade in line with India’s Act East Policy. The region’s landlocked nature and its dependence on the narrow “chicken-neck corridor” present significant challenges, which the plan aims to address through the creation of new waterway routes via Bangladesh and the consideration of other potential corridors.
Additionally, Vision 2047 is poised to tackle persistent issues such as the flood and erosion challenges faced by Assam, exacerbated by sediment from the Brahmaputra River. The strategy acknowledges the necessity for coordinated support and cooperation among all NER states and the Central government to effectively manage these environmental issues.
The structured approach outlined in Vision 2047 is set to redefine the development landscape for the North East, ensuring sustainable growth and improved connectivity, ultimately enhancing the region’s integration within India’s broader economic framework. This initiative represents a pivotal step in balancing regional development and addressing longstanding challenges, with the potential to transform the North East into a vibrant and dynamic area for economic growth and collaboration.
