Shockwaves as Dipankar Barman Faces 7-Day Police Custody: Unveiling the Truth
GUWAHATI: After vanishing for 71 days, Dipankar Barman, owner of DB Stock & Consultancy, was brought back to Guwahati and placed in a seven-day police custody on Wednesday, October 30, by the District & Sessions Judge, Kamrup Metro.
Barman is accused of a massive fraud exceeding Rs 7,000 crore spanning multiple states. He was apprehended near the Arambol Bridge in Goa on October 27 by a city police team led by Panbazar ACP Amit Mahato. Initially brought before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, the severity of the charges, which could lead to a penalty of over 10 years, led to his appearance before the District and Sessions Judge.
A new case under the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes (UDS) Act, 2019, has been filed against him at the Paltanbazar police station. His earlier case was transferred to the CBI for further investigation, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Authorities from six additional states are expected to seek Barman’s custody as numerous investors from these regions have significant stakes in his company. Investor hopes for recompense were fueled by the Assam Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh, who hinted that the UDS Act might offer some financial relief.
DGP Singh elaborated that assets seized from fraudulent schemes could be liquidated, with the proceeds distributed among defrauded investors who validate their claims. A dedicated committee will oversee the liquidation of Barman’s assets to ensure fair compensation, providing some reassurance to affected investors pending the investigation’s completion.
Among the defrauded investors is a young woman who invested Rs 1.55 lakh in Barman’s schemes, lured by promises of high returns. She shared her experience of initial returns before the scam unravelled. Following DGP Singh’s statements, she remains hopeful for a partial recovery of her funds.
Barman’s disappearance left a trail of anxious investors, exposing the extent of the fraudulent operation.
