Rising Prices Dampen Sales of Brass and Copper Utensils in Guwahati
Guwahati’s markets are experiencing a significant rise in the prices of brass and copper utensils, causing a downturn in sales. These traditionally popular household items have become more costly, making it tough for consumers to purchase them.
According to vendors, the increased prices have led to a decrease in customer visits and sales. A vendor from Fancy Bazar highlighted that sales have been below average this year, with the price of brass items seeing a stark rise. For example, an item that was sold for ₹120 last year is now priced between ₹150 and ₹160. Another vendor noted that small brass plates now cost ₹75, while small pots are priced around ₹420. This price surge has resulted in reduced market activity during the day, with only a slight increase in shoppers during the evening hours.
A shopper remarked on how Diwali shopping has become more challenging this year due to the widespread price hikes, especially for brass items, which have financial implications for many families.
Brass, silver, and gold are often sought after in Guwahati because of local beliefs in their potential to bring prosperity and ward off negativity. While jewelry traditionally fulfills this role, brass and copper utensils are considered to offer similar benefits. However, with the escalating prices, the custom of purchasing these items this season might be difficult for many households.
Vendors remain hopeful that sales will eventually pick up as the season progresses.
