Protest Over Delayed TET Exam in Tripura Sparks Call for Urgent Government Action
Agartala, 30th October 2024: Unemployed graduates in Tripura, holding B.Ed and D.El.Ed degrees, are voicing frustration over the state’s failure to conduct the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) since 2022, despite an official mandate for annual examinations. This week, a group of these graduates approached the Tripura Teacher Recruitment Board (TRBT) seeking answers, only to escalate their disappointment into a protest at the city center after an unsatisfactory response.
The protesters emphasized that in contrast to other states where TETs are held twice a year to fill teaching vacancies, Tripura’s inaction is contributing to a widening teacher shortage. They accused the government of hindering the TRBT’s readiness to conduct the exams, despite claims from the board’s director that the preparation is in place pending governmental authorization.
TRBT officials have explained that the district administration’s reluctance to facilitate the exam is a key hurdle. The director assured the job seekers that the board is prepared to proceed once the government grants permission, highlighting that the entire recruitment process spans four to five months.
As the year-end approaches without any directive from the government to initiate the exam, the situation grows increasingly urgent. Graduates have demanded that the TRBT release the exam notification by year-end, warning of intensified protests in 2025 if their demands remain unmet.
In a bid to expedite resolution, the protesting graduates have urged the TRBT director to escalate their concerns to Tripura’s Chief Minister and Education Minister, Dr. Manik Saha. With anxiety mounting, the graduates are seeking prompt action to address their prolonged unemployment and the detrimental impact on educational staffing in the region.
