Unveiling the Deception: How Trump Exploits Truth Social to Spread Alarming Conspiracy Theories
Former President Donald J. Trump has been widely recognized for promoting conspiracy theories, but a recent analysis by The New York Times reveals his activity on Truth Social has reached unprecedented levels of frequency and scale. Trump regularly shares and amplifies false, secretive plots concerning entities allegedly targeting him or Americans, with many posts directly originating from his account. The Times found that out of thousands of posts in a six-month period in 2024, at least 330 were conspiratorial, often implicating government officials or organizations like the FBI. Nearly 75% of these were from Trump himself while the rest were reposts from conspiratorial accounts.
Trump’s engagement on Truth Social, averaging 30 posts a day, far exceeds his activity on other platforms, underscoring his reliance on its user base to validate his views. The platform has attracted followers devoted to Trump, including right-wing extremists and conspiracy theory adherents, with some content infiltrating his campaign speeches, where he often warns against an “enemy from within.”
Investigators tagged 170 accounts Trump amplified, many of which frequently disseminate conspiracies, some known for ties to far-right ideologies. His reposts include sensational claims involving figures like George Soros and Vice President Kamala Harris. Despite numerous inquiries by The Times, neither Trump’s campaign nor Truth Social’s spokespeople have commented on policies regarding conspiratorial content. As the 2024 election looms, Trump’s constant messaging continues to spread doubt about democratic institutions, reinforcing a landscape where his narrative begins and ends with his followers on Truth Social.
