Shocking Twist: Jorhat Police Investigate ULFA-I’s Alleged Crypto Extortion Scheme; Outfit Firmly Denies!
Jorhat, Oct 28: The banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) is reportedly employing cryptocurrency for extortion, stirring concern among local businessmen. The development came to light after several entrepreneurs in Jorhat received demands for “donations” of ₹3 lakh, purportedly for the outfit’s “special purposes.” The extortion letters, allegedly signed by an individual claiming to be ULFA-I captain Ashim Asom, directed the payments be made to unique Ethereum wallet addresses by October 27.
One of these letters, acquired by The Assam Tribune, read: “Due to some special purpose, we need contributions from your organisation. We hope the sum of the said contributions will be sent to the organisation at the following crypto wallet address…” The letters also warned recipients against causing “any complications that might harm the outfit.”
The Jorhat police have proactively registered a case (466/24) against ULFA-I, but have refrained from sharing details about their ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, ULFA-I has categorically denied any involvement in the alleged extortion. In a statement released on Sunday, the group asserted there is no member named Ashim Asom within their ranks, and denounced the extortion letters as fraudulent.
They cautioned, “Previously, there have been many examples of miscreants using the name of ULFA-I to extort money from people and getting arrested. So, we request the business community not to cooperate with this conman named Ashim Asom.”
This incident marks a concerning advancement in tech-driven crime in the region, underscoring the need for vigilance among the business community and robust investigative efforts by law enforcement agencies to thwart such cyber threats. As the situation develops, local authorities are on high alert to prevent further exploitation.
