On Sunday, Thalapathy Vijay made headlines with a significant political move by hosting the inaugural state conference, known as “Maanadu,” for his budding party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The event drew an impressive crowd of over 800,000 supporters from across Tamil Nadu, indicating Vijay’s substantial influence and his serious intent to challenge the established political giants of the region.
Vijay introduced his party’s core values under the compelling slogan, “One caste, one god,” promoting equality and fair treatment for all party members. He boldly addressed critics who label him as inexperienced, declaring, “We may be children in politics, but we play confidently with the snake of politics.” This statement reflected his readiness to disrupt the political status quo.
Highlighting his ideological inspirations, Vijay acknowledged Periyar’s principles of women’s education, equality, and social justice while distancing his party from Periyar’s atheistic views. He also cited leaders like K. Kamaraj and B.R. Ambedkar as guiding figures, emphasizing social equality. Notably, he recognized female icons like Velu Nachiyar and Anjalai Ammal, showcasing TVK’s commitment to honoring women leaders.
Vijay didn’t shy away from taking subtle digs at the DMK, accusing their ruling family of exploiting the state under the “Dravidian model.” He further questioned the DMK’s labeling of the BJP as “fascist” by challenging, “If they are fascist, then what are you doing?”
Addressing those dismissing him as just an actor unfit for politics, Vijay drew parallels with legends like MGR and NTR, asserting, “They too were called actors, yet they went on to rule their states. Like them, I will conquer as well.”
Despite some observers noting ideological similarities with the DMK, leading to his party being dubbed “V-DMK,” Vijay’s debut in politics has clearly stirred excitement, marking a potent entry into Tamil Nadu’s political scene.
