Nadda’s Unwavering Commitment Ignites Hope for BJP’s Victory in Meghalaya Bypoll
Special Report from New Delhi
Three weeks before the pivotal Gambegre bypoll, BJP national president JP Nadda engaged in an in-depth discussion with state minister AL Hek regarding the party’s campaign strategy in Meghalaya. Nadda assured Hek of comprehensive support as the BJP aims to capture the Gambegre seat in the tribal-dominated Garo Hills region, a known Congress stronghold.
In November, by-elections are scheduled for 48 Assembly and two parliamentary constituencies across India, coinciding with state elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra. The BJP is determined to secure the majority of these seats. Hek updated Nadda on BJP’s announcement of the list of key campaigners for the Gambegre by-election. He emphasized the party’s efforts in engaging with voters and addressing critical local issues that hold significance at the grassroots level. Hek also lauded Nadda for the BJP’s recent achievements in the Haryana Assembly polls.
The Gambegre bypoll promises a tightly contested race with BJP’s Bernard Marak, NPP’s Mehtab Chandee A Sangma, TMC’s Sadhiarani Sangma, and Congress’s Jingjang M Marak all vying for victory. Two independent candidates also add to the competition. Mehtab is notably the wife of current Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, while Sadhiarani is related to former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
This by-election is crucial as all parties are enthusiastic about expanding their influence in the Garo Hills. The ruling NPP aims to escalate its grip in the 60-member House, while TMC strives to demonstrate its potential beyond its stronghold. Despite its ambitions, BJP is cautious about past performance in the region, following low voter turnout in the last Assembly elections.
The Congress, despite internal fractures, hopes to leverage its recent success in the Tura Lok Sabha seat, formerly held by resigning Gambegre MLA Saleng Sangma, necessitating this by-election. The Gambegre vote count will occur on November 23, ten days post-polls, marking a decisive moment for regional politics.
