Revolutionary Digital Water Management Portal Launching in December: Transforming Tamil Nadu’s Future!
The Tamil Nadu government is set to launch a digital database portal for the Water Resources Information and Management System by December, announced K. Manivasan, Additional Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department, at the Aquasouth Summit in Chennai. The ₹30-crore project aims to prevent encroachments on waterbodies by geotagging their boundaries and making this data accessible to the public. The portal will offer detailed information on storage capacity, water quality, and real-time data to enhance awareness and improve water management and conservation efforts. Additionally, the department is developing a ₹68-crore real-time flood forecasting system for the Chennai basin, also expected by December. This system will use data from sensors and rain gauges to provide street-level flood information. A comprehensive flood control plan for Chennai, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, is also in the works, aimed at addressing impacts from erratic monsoons. In agriculture, the state is promoting less water-intensive crops and seeking international partnerships, including one with the University of Florida, to boost productivity. The summit also emphasized partnerships and technology in addressing groundwater depletion and sewage pollution, with notable speakers including Chris Hodges, US Consul General in Chennai, and Vanitha Mohan of the CII-Southern Region. Panel discussions covered topics such as water reuse technologies, highlighting the need for public-private collaborations to meet increasing demand.
