Sushanta Urges IndiGo to Cap Agartala-Kolkata Fares: A Bold Call for Affordable Travel and International Status Progress
Agartala, 23rd October 2024: Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury has taken decisive actions to address rising air travel costs and infrastructure development in Tripura. Chowdhury wrote to Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo), urging a cap on airfares for the Agartala-Kolkata route. Highlighting public concern, he noted that ticket prices are soaring between Rs 10,000 and Rs 12,000 for the relatively short 327 km journey. Additionally, he addressed the recent withdrawal of three IndiGo flights from the sector.
Chowdhury conveyed that while operational costs impact pricing, IndiGo should consider how these price hikes affect passengers. He referenced recent changes in the airline’s winter schedule, including replacing two 78-seat ATR flights with a 180-seat Airbus from October 27 and December 16, 2024. However, the cancellation of the final night Airbus flight between Kolkata and Agartala will further reduce travel options by 360 seats. Chowdhury urged for a maximum price limit to safeguard public interests and requested the airline management to reinstate the discontinued services.
In a separate correspondence to Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Chowdhury expressed disappointment over the sluggish progress in upgrading MBB Airport to an Immigration Check Post and subsequently an International Airport. Despite funding allocations and plans to initiate the Agartala-Chittagong-Agartala route, advancements remain slow.
Chowdhury’s proactive engagement aims to ensure fair ticket pricing and expedite airport development, reflecting the needs and interests of Tripura’s residents and travelers. His appeals underscore a commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and supporting the state’s economic growth.
