Heartbreaking Blow: Gagan Narang and NRAI Disappointed as Shooting Axed from Commonwealth Games 2026
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and Olympic medallist Gagan Narang have expressed their disappointment over shooting’s exclusion from the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Shooting, a key sport for India since its debut in the 1996 CWG, has contributed significantly to India’s medal tally, with 135 medals, comprising 63 gold, 44 silver, and 28 bronze. Despite efforts by the Indian government and the NRAI, shooting and several other sports have been left out of the upcoming Games. The NRAI had even offered to host the shooting events in India.
Narang, a bronze medallist from the 2012 London Olympics, voiced his disappointment, highlighting the impact on shooters who had been preparing for the event. He also lamented the absence of other potential medal-winning sports for India in the 2026 Games. While acknowledging the inclusion of ten sports, Narang emphasized the dedication of federations and athletes in preparing for such prestigious events, expressing that the CWG has traditionally held a significant place in India’s sporting calendar. The exclusion of multiple disciplines, including field hockey, marks a shift toward a less comprehensive Games lineup in Glasgow.
