Revitalize Andhra Pradesh’s Heritage: Empowering Artisans by Cultivating Trees for Kondapalli & Etikoppaka Toys
The Andhra Pradesh government is set to boost toy-making by promoting the cultivation of Ankudu and Tella Poniki trees, crucial raw materials for the region’s traditional toys—Etikoppaka and Kondapalli. As part of a block plantation initiative under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), Ankudu trees will be cultivated in Anakapalle and Alluri Seetharama Raju districts, while Tella Poniki will be grown in NTR district. This initiative aims to sustain over 500 artisans from 200 families who have been involved in toy-making for generations. Orders have been circulated to local officials to devise a comprehensive action plan involving the revenue, forest, and panchayat raj departments. An initial cultivation of Ankudu over 200 acres, primarily in riverbed lands known for suitable moisture, is planned. The project will employ MGNREGS workers, supported by allocated funds. Notably, Ankudu is valued for its softwood, ideal for toy-making, while Tella Poniki provides lightweight, flexible wood. The government’s focus on these plantations underscores a commitment to preserving Andhra Pradesh’s cultural heritage while supporting local economies.
