Serbia’s Bold Pledge: President’s Defiant Stance in Emotional Talks with Putin Against Sanctions on Russia
BELGRADE, Serbia — Despite ongoing pressure from Western nations, Serbia will maintain its stance against imposing sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, according to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. Following a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Vucic expressed on Instagram that the dialogue, the first in over two years between the two leaders, was conducted in a friendly manner and aimed at fostering stronger ties and trust between Serbia and Russia. Though Serbia seeks European Union membership, it has traditionally aligned with Russia, its Slavic ally, and has resisted joining Western sanctions despite condemning Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine.
President Vucic emphasized Serbia’s autonomy in decision-making, anticipating Western criticism of his interaction with Putin. He praised Russia for supplying gas to Serbia at favorable terms, though Serbia is exploring diversification of its energy sources. Serbia, which was never part of the Soviet bloc, celebrated the 80th anniversary of Belgrade’s liberation from Nazi occupation, reflecting on support from Yugoslavia’s communist partisans and the Soviet Red Army. This event, marked by pro-Russian sentiment, saw thousands in Belgrade displaying Russian flags and slogans. In his Russian-language speech, Vucic acknowledged the Red Army’s crucial role in Belgrade’s liberation, underscoring a historical bond with Russia.
