Unlocking Coimbatore’s Potential: Transformative Partnership with Urban Planners for a Thriving Future!
Coimbatore’s development strategy was a focal point at the World Architecture Day celebrations organized by the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) in the city on Saturday. Coimbatore MP Ganapathi P. Rajkumar announced that the Coimbatore Corporation plans to engage with urban planners post-Deepavali to address the city’s sustainable growth. He emphasized the need for meticulous planning as Coimbatore anticipates increased international flights, promising a boom in the Information Technology sector and other industries. However, he expressed concerns over the environmental impact on the city’s lakes, calling for efforts to protect local biodiversity.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran highlighted the importance of green buildings and water conservation. Rajesh Lund, president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stressed that 50% of Tamil Nadu’s population is expected to urbanize soon, urging the inclusion of architects and young talent in Coimbatore’s master planning. Similarly, P. Chandranesan, chairman of the IIA’s Tamil Nadu chapter, noted that only a small fraction of projects currently engage architects, advocating for greater involvement of young professionals.
S. Jayakumar, head of the Coimbatore IIA center, announced that this year’s theme, “Empowering Next Generation to Involve in Urban Design,” aims to inspire young architects. The event featured a two-day exhibition, displaying award-winning projects, showcasing innovative works by Coimbatore architects.
