The Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra has issued notices to various social media platforms to remove 1,752 posts containing fake news aimed at misleading voters. This action comes ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections scheduled for November 20, and is taken under section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, which allows authorities to compel the removal of content that might be used for unlawful activities.
According to an official release, over 300 posts were promptly deleted after being flagged by the electoral body. The breakdown of these objectionable posts is as follows: 143 were found on Facebook, 280 on Instagram, 1,296 on X (formerly Twitter), 31 on YouTube, and two on other platforms. As of the latest update, Facebook removed 16 posts with action pending on 127 others. Instagram took down 29 posts, X removed 251, and YouTube deleted five since receiving the notices.
In addition to tackling fake news, the Election Commission’s c-VIGIL app recorded 420 complaints about violations of the election code of conduct. Of these, 414 have been resolved, with Thane district registering the highest number of disposals. Furthermore, since the enforcement of the election code earlier this week, authorities have seized materials worth 10.64 crore rupees, including cash, drugs, liquor, and luxury giveaways.
This decisive action underscores the state’s commitment to maintaining electoral integrity, ensuring voters are not influenced by misinformation in the lead-up to the elections.
