Urgent Plea: Empowering Framework Sought by High Court to Tackle Concert Ticket Resale Chaos
A petition submitted to the Delhi High Court seeks regulatory oversight on the resale of concert tickets through authorized platforms. Prompted by Ms. Samridhi and four others, the plea requests that the Union Ministries of Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology, intervene in blocking unlawful platforms that engage in unauthorized ticket sales in India. Currently, the case is set to be reviewed by the court of the Chief Justice on October 23, given the similarity to another ongoing petition.
The petition highlights that platforms like BookmyShow (BMS) should offer a reliable digital solution to curb ticket scalping and black-marketing. However, the announcement of high-profile events, featuring artists such as Diljit Dosanjh and Coldplay, often triggers a surge in black marketing. Unauthorised vendors exploit the situation by selling tickets at exorbitant premiums, impacting genuine customers.
Coldplay, among others, has collaborated directly with BMS to sell concert tickets, aiming to prevent unauthorized sales. Despite these efforts, rogue platforms continue to operate and sell tickets illegally. The Chief Justice’s court has, in previous sessions, sought explanations from both the central and Delhi governments about these pervasive scalping practices that manipulate and exploit the public by inflating ticket prices.
