Amit Shah Urges Police to Fiercely Safeguard Citizens’ Fundamental Rights
Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the urgent need for the police system to actively safeguard the fundamental rights of Indian citizens. Speaking to the 2023 batch probationers of the Indian Police Service (IPS) in New Delhi, Mr. Shah highlighted that the police must be vigilant in reducing crime within the country’s borders and ensure swift justice delivery. He noted that 99% of India’s police stations are now online through the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS).
Mr. Shah discussed new criminal laws focusing on timely justice, strengthened evidence collection, and increased technology use. These laws include a time-bound judicial process, aiming for full implementation, including technology upgrades, software development, and training at every police station nationwide within five years. The goal is to complete the justice process within three years post-FIR registration.
He highlighted the government’s success in reducing violence by 70% in Jammu and Kashmir, the North East, and Left Wing Extremism affected areas, asserting that Indian agencies now have full control over these regions. Mr. Shah also reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047—a nation free of terror and drugs, with robust internal security and protection of human rights. During the event, trainee IPS officers also shared their training experiences with the Home Minister.
