Peace Restored: Enhanced Security Brings Hope Amid Eased Communal Tensions in North Tripura
In the aftermath of a communal clash at Pekucherra in North Tripura, the region is cautiously returning to normalcy, as stated by the newly appointed district Police Superintendent, Avinash Rai. Previously the SP of Dhalai, Rai has been actively involved in restoring peace, alongside security forces conducting confidence-building marches. The Inspector General of Police remains in the area to supervise all security measures.
The unrest ignited on Tuesday when miscreants allegedly targeted a Shiva temple, triggering anger within the Hindu community. The incident swiftly circulated on social media, provoking retaliatory intentions aimed at local mosques. To address the escalating crisis, a substantial deployment of Tripura State Rifles troops and police was made. Superintendent Bhanupada Chakraborty, initially on the scene, has since been reassigned to Police Headquarters due to the heightened situation.
To prevent further chaos, the authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and suspended internet services across North Tripura for 72 hours. This measure, as noted by a senior official, intends to curb the spread of misinformation. Additionally, mobile internet was suspended in the neighboring Unakoti district, where minority Muslim families rallied under the Sankhalaghu Suraksha Samiti banner, demanding accountability for the mosque attacks in Panisagar.
Kanta Jangir, SP for Unakoti District, reported that the situation there remains calm, with protestors dispersing peacefully post-rally from Babur Bazar to Irani Police Station. However, the initial violent clashes between communities in Kadamtala have led to an influx of hate speech on social media. In response, the Tripura Police have established a special unit to identify and remove posts that incite communal hostility.
The government and law enforcement agencies continue to work diligently to restore order and ensure long-term peace in the region amidst ongoing investigations into the incidents.
