Omar Abdullah’s Bold Move Sparks Change: A Strategic Counter to BJP in Jammu with New Appointments

In a strategic move, newly appointed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has addressed concerns of a Kashmir-centric cabinet by selecting Surinder Choudhary, the Jammu leader of the National Conference, as Deputy Chief Minister. This decision, seen as Omar’s initial political maneuver, aims to provide representation for Jammu after Choudhary’s significant victory over BJP’s state president Ravinder Raina in the Nowshera constituency. The National Conference, in alliance with the Congress and five independents, has formed the government following their success in the 2024 assembly elections, where they secured 42 seats in the union territory. Choudhary’s appointment, along with lawmakers like Satish Sharma, underscores an effort to include voices from Jammu, further highlighted after a polarizing campaign by the BJP, which had aimed to lead the J&K government.

Choudhary, previously affiliated with PDP and BJP, expressed pride in his appointment, marking a significant milestone for the Pir Panjal region. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Ghulam Ahmed Mir reiterated the party’s focus on restoring J&K’s statehood, dismissing any discord with the National Conference over cabinet positions and urging adherence to the people’s mandate.

The cabinet also includes figures like Sakina Itoo, Javed Rana, and Javed Ahmed Dar, with a notable absence of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee members due to their stance on statehood restoration. This development reflects Omar Abdullah’s commitment to inclusivity and his strategic counter to the BJP’s influence in Jammu.
