Northeast India: The Exciting New Epicenter for Inspiring MICE Tourism
The Northeast region of India, widely celebrated for its distinct tourist appeal, is now gaining traction in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism sector. This branch of tourism, encompassing business travel for corporate gatherings, holds the potential to significantly augment tourism in the area due to its expansive scale and demand.
The Indian government has recently stepped up its efforts to promote MICE tourism in the Northeast, resulting in growing interest from the corporate world to host events in this largely untapped area. The natural attractions and unique ecosystems of the region offer a refreshing alternative to conventional MICE venues and eliminate the need for extensive international travel for Indian companies.
The push for MICE growth is being bolstered by governmental initiatives such as the Swadesh Darshan scheme aimed at enhancing tourism infrastructure, with specific plans like the development of a Convention Centre in Aizawl, Mizoram. These efforts aim to elevate the status of the Northeast into a promising MICE destination.
Traditional venues like Delhi, Goa, Mumbai, and Hyderabad have long dominated the MICE landscape, but they risk reaching saturation. Industry experts highlight the Northeast’s emergence as a viable alternative, particularly as market growth in these established centers levels off. The presence of major domestic and international hotel chains underscores the region’s burgeoning potential.
High-profile events, such as landmark G20 meetings and thematic festivals, showcase the region’s capability to host large-scale gatherings. Despite its advantages, India holds less than 1% of the global MICE market, with seven of its cities ranking among the top 475 globally according to 2019 ICCA rankings. The Indian exhibition industry is expanding rapidly, surpassing the national GDP growth rate.
With continued infrastructure development and strategic investments, the Northeast is poised to become a significant player in the MICE tourism sector, drawing both domestic and international visitors.
