Transformative Revival: Assam Government’s Bold Initiative to Save 129 Wetlands and Combat Devastating Floods – Northeast News
The Assam government has launched a strategic initiative to revitalize 129 beels, or wetlands, across 3,800 hectares to combat flooding and enhance fish production. These beels are vital for hydrological functions such as flood control, groundwater recharge, and preventing erosion, serving as critical resources for both environmental sustainability and the fisheries sector in Assam. However, challenges like siltation, reduced water levels, and insufficient natural fish stocking have affected their effectiveness and viability.
The rejuvenation project will prioritize operations including dredging, desilting, and constructing water-retaining structures to enhance water storage and fish breeding conditions. Out of an initial list of 190 beels identified by District Fisheries Development Officers, 129 have been selected in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for rejuvenation efforts. These wetlands have been geo-mapped by the Assam State Application Centre (ASSAC), with 22 beels earmarked for immediate intervention, expected to commence with contract signings by February 2025.
The project’s financial outlay is Rs 796.88 crore, with 80% of funding from the ADB and the state government contributing the remaining 20%. This comprehensive project will include the dredging and deepening of river channels to facilitate better water flow and fish migration, along with desilting, de-weeding, and the creation of water pools to boost water retention and enhance fish habitats.
A feasibility study and a draft detailed project report have been prepared by M/s Electroveen Engineering Private Limited, with final project plans anticipated by November 2024. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the aquatic ecosystem of Assam’s beels, promoting increased fish production and improved flood resilience. This strategic effort underscores Assam’s commitment to environmental rejuvenation and sustainable resource management for future resilience and prosperity.
