Brace for Impact: Potent Low-Pressure System Over Bay of Bengal Promises Torrential Rainfall Across Tamil Nadu

A low-pressure area formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal early Monday, October 14, 2024, is expected to trigger widespread rainfall over North Tamil Nadu, marking the onset of the Northeast Monsoon in the state. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has predicted that heavy rainfall will commence in North Tamil Nadu and delta districts on October 14, intensifying on October 15 and 16. On Monday, isolated places in nine districts, including Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Pudukottai, could receive heavy to very heavy rainfall of up to 12 cm. Chennai and nearby districts are also forecasted to experience significant rainfall.

On October 15, intense rainfall is expected in eight districts, including Chennai. By October 16, Chennai and its neighboring areas may face extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm in isolated locations. The low-pressure system is likely to evolve into a well-marked area, moving towards North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjacent southern Andhra Pradesh coasts over the next two days. Concurrently, a depression over the central Arabian Sea is anticipated to head towards the Oman coast, with moisture-laden clouds from these systems causing intense rain.

Several areas, including Coimbatore (6 cm) and Budalur in Thanjavur (12 cm), recorded moderate to heavy rainfall as of Monday morning. With the Southwest Monsoon’s withdrawal, the transition to easterly and northeasterly winds will herald the arrival of the Northeast Monsoon in Tamil Nadu, according to the India Meteorological Department.
