India wrapped up their Asian Table Tennis Championships with a commendable three-medal haul, marking October 13 as a milestone in their sporting history. The standout performance came from Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee, who secured India’s first-ever bronze in the women’s doubles event. Their remarkable journey halted in the semifinals against Japan’s duo Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara, after a swift 4-11, 9-11, 8-11 defeat. Prior to this, the Indian pair ousted South Korea’s Kim Nayeong and Lee Eunhye in the quarterfinals, etching their names in the record books.
Furthermore, the Indian women’s team, comprising Manika Batra, Ayhika Mukherjee, and Sutirtha Mukherjee, clinched another historic bronze in the team event. This achievement marked the country’s first medal in the women’s team category since the championship’s inception in 1972. Despite their momentum, they fell 1-3 to Japan in the semifinal clash.
On the men’s front, India claimed a bronze in the team event, consistent with their performance in the two preceding championships. The team, featuring Achanta Sharath Kamal, Manav Thakkar, and Harmeet Desai, faced a 0-3 setback against Chinese Taipei in the semifinals.
In the men’s singles, India’s campaign saw Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah exit in the pre-quarterfinals. Thakkar, ranked 60th globally, stunned South Korea’s world No. 14 Jang Woojin but later succumbed to Hong Kong’s Baldwin Chan in straight sets. Meanwhile, Manush Shah showcased resilience against Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yun-Ju, managing to win two games before bowing out with a narrow 8-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-6, 12-14 loss.
Overall, the championship underscored India’s rising prominence in table tennis on the Asian stage, with historic milestones and commendable performances.
