Heroic Police Constable and Youth’s Daring Rescue of Car Passengers Trapped in Flooded Madurai Subway
In a dramatic rescue operation in Madurai on the night of October 12, 2024, police constable Thangamuthu and local youths saved two passengers from an SUV submerged in the flooded Ponnagaram subway. The SUV, driven by Gopi, unknowingly entered the submerged subway despite the presence of a police patrol vehicle meant to deter such actions. As the SUV began submerging, constable Thangamuthu promptly raised an alarm and, with the help of locals R. Chandrasekar and G. Karthikeyan, swam to the SUV to rescue the stranded passengers. Their brave efforts were recognized the following day by Additional Director General of Police S. Davidson Devasirvatham, who presented them with rewards for their heroism. Meanwhile, a police patrol vehicle, improperly secured, also rolled into the water due to the heavy rain that had inundated the area, compounding the chaos. Fire and Rescue services were called to the scene to retrieve the submerged vehicles.
