Rima Das’ Triumphant ‘Village Rockstars 2’ Wins Prestigious Kim Jiseok Award at Busan Film Festival
Guwahati, Oct 11: Rima Das’s highly anticipated sequel, “Village Rockstars 2,” has achieved international acclaim by winning the prestigious Kim Jiseok Award for “Best Film” at the 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in South Korea. The film had its global debut at BIFF, marking it as the sole Indian feature showcased. Das is celebrated as the third Indian director, after Aparna Sen and Pradip Kurbah, to receive this esteemed honor.
Thrilled with the recognition, Das expressed her gratitude: “Receiving the Kim Jiseok Award, named after a pioneer of Asian cinema, is truly a privilege.” She also reflected on the challenges faced in creating a sequel to her groundbreaking independent film, noting the risk involved in maintaining its original essence, and hinted at the possibility of “Village Rockstars 3” in the future.
The jury, comprising Christian Jeune, Prasanna Vithanage, and Shin Suwon, praised the film as “an honest poetic expression of everyday life, illustrating the harmony between nature and humanity through a young girl’s perspective.”
“Village Rockstars 2” is set to premiere in India at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024 under the South Asia Competition from October 19 to 24. Das extended her heartfelt thanks to the jury, the Busan International Film Festival, her cast including Bhanita Das, and her co-producer Fran Borgia, acknowledging their support and patience over the last four years.
This sequel builds upon the success of the original “Village Rockstars,” which garnered international attention following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, earning the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 2018 and representing India in the 2019 Academy Awards.
The film, produced by Flying River Films and Akanga Film Asia, features an ensemble cast including Bhanita Das, Basanti Das, and Junumoni Boro. Das continues to inspire with her commitment to storytelling and cinematic innovation.
