Nepal’s Hope Restored: India to Deliver 20 Lifesaving Bailey Bridges for Flood-Ravaged Areas
In response to the devastating floods and landslides that struck Nepal following heavy rainfall on September 27-28, the Nepalese government plans to install 20 Bailey bridges sourced from India. This initiative aims to restore crucial infrastructure, particularly river crossings, that sustained significant damage. The announcement was made by Nepal’s Minister for Physical Infrastructures and Transport, Devendra Dahal, during his visit to the worst-affected areas in Sindhupalchowk.
These temporary bridges will play a pivotal role in reconnecting vital transportation links, with strategic locations like Tatopani identified for their installation. Minister Dahal was joined by Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and Defence Minister Manbir Rai as they assessed the destruction in various parts of the region, including an inspection of the Khurkot Bridge, a critical connector between Sindhuli and Ramechhap, and the heavily impacted Bhotekoshi area in Sindhupalchowk.
The severe flooding has resulted in over 245 fatalities and extensive property losses. In a bid to expedite relief and rehabilitation efforts, the Nepalese government has classified 14 districts as disaster crisis zones for a period of three months. This classification is intended to streamline the response and ensure efficient delivery of aid to the affected areas.
The deployment of the Bailey bridges is a crucial component of Nepal’s broader recovery strategy.
