Triumphant Harmony: Congress’s Determined Efforts Restore Peace in Mizoram’s SHC Area
Mizoram Congress President Lal Thanzara announced on Tuesday that peace has been achieved in the Hmar-dominated northeastern regions of Mizoram, crediting his party’s efforts for ending years of insurgency. The announcement took place as he revealed the names of 12 Congress candidates for the upcoming Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) elections. Speaking at the Congress Bhavan in Aizawl, Thanzara highlighted that the Congress has consistently advocated for peace, culminating in the creation of the SHC. He referenced the Congress-led Mizoram government’s successful talks with Hmar militants, resulting in a peace accord signed in 2018.
The SHC polls are scheduled for November 5, with 23,789 eligible voters, including 11,914 women. The deadline for filing nominations is October 10, with withdrawal of candidature allowed until October 14, according to the State Election Commission. Immediately after voting concludes, vote counting will commence.
The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and Hmar People’s Convention (HPC) are contesting the elections in alliance, with ZPM vying for eight seats and HPC for four. The main opposition, the Mizo National Front (MNF), has partnered with the Hmar People’s Convention (Reformed) or HPC(R), contesting 10 seats and two, respectively.
The SHC consists of 12 constituencies, covering 31 villages within three assembly constituencies located in the Aizawl, Kolasib, and Saitual districts. During the previous council polls in November 2019, the MNF-HPC alliance won 10 seats, while independent candidates secured two. However, power dynamics within the council have shifted over the past five years, with the ZPM-HPC alliance currently in control. The SHC was officially established on July 9, 2018, following the peace accord between the Mizoram government and the former underground Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic), signed on April 2, 2018.
