Shockwaves in the NFL: New York Jets Boldly Fire Head Coach Robert Saleh
The New York Jets have dismissed head coach Robert Saleh following a disappointing start to the 2024 NFL season, compounded by ongoing tensions with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Saleh, who leaves with a 20-26 record over just over three seasons, will be replaced on an interim basis by defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.
Team owner Woody Johnson announced the decision, emphasizing the need for a new direction to meet the team’s high expectations. The season had begun with optimism, with Rodgers returning after a leg injury sidelined him for most of 2023. However, the team suffered a heavy loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the opener, though they managed to secure victories over the struggling Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots.
Despite those wins, the Jets were derailed by back-to-back losses against the Denver Broncos at home and the Minnesota Vikings in London. The losses were marred by discipline issues, such as five false start penalties against Denver, which Saleh attributed to Rodgers’ complex cadence. Further highlighting the strained relationship, Rodgers reportedly rejected a hug from Saleh during the Patriots game.
In his statement, Johnson acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but insisted it was necessary for the team’s progress. The Jets now aim to navigate the rest of the season with Ulbrich at the helm, hoping to improve their standing and resolve internal conflicts.
