Fierce Manipur Congress Blast ED Summons to PCC Chief as Outrageous Political Vendetta
In a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Imphal on October 8, 2024, N. Bupenda Meitei, Senior Spokesperson for the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), vehemently criticized the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) recent actions against PCC President Keisham Meghachandra Singh. The ED’s summons was labeled by the Congress as an act of politically driven “vendetta, vengeance, harassment, and revenge.”
Keisham Meghachandra Singh, also a Member of the Legislative Assembly, has been a prominent critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s governance at both central and state levels, especially given the persistent unrest in Manipur since May 2023. The Congress asserted that Meghachandra has been a crucial voice for the public, highlighting the BJP’s shortcomings.
On October 7, 2024, Meghachandra was unexpectedly summoned by the ED’s Special Task Force in New Delhi, demanding his presence on the same day, which he was unable to fulfill due to the impractical notice period. The Congress perceived this as a tactic to stifle dissent and distract from what they called the central government’s “colossal failures” in Manipur. The absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the state for the past 17 months, amidst its ongoing crisis, was specifically pointed out as a significant concern.
Despite these actions, the MPCC affirmed that the Congress party remains undeterred and will continue to oppose any attempts to silence opposition voices. They emphasized their commitment to holding the government accountable for its actions and failures in addressing the issues plaguing Manipur.
