Electrifying Showdown: MFA Unveils Thrilling Meghalaya Youth League Semi-Finals Line-Up!
Shillong, Oct 7: The inaugural Meghalaya Youth League 2024 has confirmed its semifinalists following an exhilarating round of quarterfinals. Advancing in both U-14 and U-16 categories are West Jaintia District Sports Association, Shillong Sports Association, Nongstoin District Sports Association, and Ri-Bhoi District Sports Association. These teams emerged victorious following rigorous zonal rounds, culminating in the exciting quarterfinals held across various venues in the state.
Organized by the Meghalaya Football Association with the support of the Government of Meghalaya, the tournament saw the top two teams from each zone converge in Shillong. The U-14 quarterfinals were hosted at the MFA Turf in Polo, while the U-16 teams contested at the Sports Authority of India center at NEHU.
The quarterfinal action kicked off on Saturday, showcasing the rich talent among Meghalaya’s youth footballers. West Jaintia secured a dramatic victory in the U-14 category via a penalty shootout against Pyndengumiong District Sports Association, winning 5-4 after a 2-2 deadlock. Their U-16 counterparts showed formidable prowess, trouncing Pyndengumiong 5-0 with Dangkermi-oo Ryngkhlem scoring a hat-trick.
The Shillong SA U-14 team delivered a stellar performance, defeating Tura District Football Association 15-0, led by Damebantei Kharkongor’s four goals. Their U-16 team had a tougher challenge, eventually overcoming Williamnagar District Sports Association 2-0 after a tenacious contest.
On Monday, Ri-Bhoi dominated the U-14 North Garo Hills District Sports Association with a 6-0 victory, but their U-16 match presented more drama. Trailing 1-2 at halftime, Ri-Bhoi rallied to win 5-2. In other matches, Nongstoin edged out Amlarem Block Sports Association 3-2 in U-14 after extra time, while the U-16 team clinched a 3-1 victory.
The semifinals are set for Wednesday, with the U-14 and U-16 contests promising more thrilling football action. Finals are scheduled for Friday, promising a fitting climax to the tournament.
