Tragic Surge: Devastating Death Toll in Garo Hills Climbs to 15
In a tragic development in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills, the flood-related death toll has risen to 15 following the demise of five more individuals on Sunday. This unfortunate rise in fatalities includes the deaths of Bijoy S Sangma and his son Wian Chigado R Marak, who were swept away by the floodwaters near the Dimapara bridge in the West Garo Hills district. Additionally, Amerin K Marak and her daughter Manase K Marak lost their lives in a landslide in Gongdop village, East Garo Hills. Another victim, Thenseng R Marak, died after a tree fell on his vehicle in the Songsak Reserve Forest of East Garo Hills.
The previous day saw at least 10 deaths, including seven family members who perished in a landslide in the West Garo Hills district. In response to these calamitous events, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma convened a review meeting on Sunday to assess the situation. The Chief Minister has ordered immediate ex gratia payments to the families of those who died.
Efforts are underway to manage the crisis, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) deployed to conduct search and rescue operations in the most severely impacted areas.
The situation continues to be monitored closely, as authorities strive to mitigate further loss and provide relief to the affected communities.
