Tragic Encounter: Heartbreaking Tale of a Man Killed by Wild Elephant in Kil Kotagiri, T.N.
Residents of Kengarai have intensified efforts to ensure that a wild elephant, blamed for the death of a local man, is captured by staging a road-block protest. The incident in question occurred near Kil Kotagiri on the night of October 6, 2024, when P. Vijayaraj, a 34-year-old resident of Kurakarai, fell victim to an elephant attack while returning home on foot with two companions. Despite being rushed to Coimbatore for medical attention, Vijayaraj succumbed to his injuries.
In response to the tragic event, locals claim that the same elephant was involved in a prior attack last month. This has prompted protestors to express their demand for action by blocking roads, urging authorities to capture the allegedly aggressive elephant. Discussions involving Forest Department officials and local police have been held to address these concerns.
S. Gowtham, Divisional Forest Officer of the Nilgiris, informed The Hindu that a Rapid Response Team from Coonoor is actively monitoring the seven elephants currently residing in the area. He stated that further measures will hinge on investigations confirming the claims of aggressive behavior by the elephant in question. Such actions aim to reduce the risk of future negative human-elephant interactions.
