Devastating Deluge: West Garo Hills in Meghalaya Reels Under Torrential Rainfall
Intense rainfall continues to devastate Meghalaya, with the West Garo Hills district bearing the brunt of the adverse weather conditions. Media reports confirm at least three fatalities and numerous injuries due to the severe weather. The entire state is grappling with widespread flash floods and landslides, which have caused significant damage.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning, forecasting very heavy rainfall in West Garo Hills over the next 24 hours. In light of this, the State Disaster Management Authority has urged residents to remain vigilant, highlighting the likelihood of thunderstorms, lightning, and extreme rainfall in various parts of the district.
The recent deluge has already claimed lives, including that of Santa N. Marak, a 57-year-old resident of Dalu village, who perished in a landslide on October 4. Marak’s daughter also suffered injuries and is currently receiving medical care at a nearby health center.
The catastrophic conditions prompted the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to launch a comprehensive relief and rescue operation to assist affected communities. The district’s Silkigre PHC and adjacent villages are among the hardest hit, enduring extensive flash floods that have obliterated homes and bridges and toppled trees.
The situation remains dire, with authorities working tirelessly to provide aid and mitigate further damage. Residents are urged to adhere to safety advisories and remain cautious as the region braces for more torrential weather.
