Tragic Injustice: Four Microfinance Employees Arrested After Daily Wage Laborer’s Heartbreaking Suicide in Mayiladuthurai
Four employees from three microfinance firms were arrested in connection with the suicide of Munusamy, a 45-year-old daily wage worker from Kadalangudi panchayat. Munusamy reportedly took his life following harassment over loan repayment. The accused, identified as R. Subash, M. Prabhakaran, S. Ajith Kumar, and K. Keerthivasan, allegedly visited Munusamy’s home on September 26, demanding immediate payment in harsh terms. Munusamy had borrowed ₹2.8 lakh and was regularly repaying until health issues disrupted his finances. Distressed by the aggressive collection tactics, he attempted to end his life and succumbed to his injuries at Tiruvarur Government Medical College Hospital.
In response to Munusamy’s suicide, members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) organized a road blockade on the Mayiladuthurai-Kumbakonam Road, leading to the detention of 110 protesters by police. Superintendent G. Stalin announced that authorities would take stringent actions against intimidating recovery practices and encouraged the public to report similar cases. The police reaffirmed their commitment to supporting individuals facing financial distress.
(For those experiencing suicidal thoughts, assistance is available through the State’s health helpline 104, Tele-MANAS 14416, and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.)
