Stunning Durga Puja Art Preview Catapults Kolkata’s Biggest Festival to International Fame
A global extravaganza commenced at Tala Prattoy, a puja pandal in north Kolkata, celebrating the Durga Pujas as a worldwide event. Attended by dignitaries from various countries, the preview started on September 30 with ‘massArt,’ allowing locals and tourists to explore 26 selected pandals ahead of the main festivities. This initiative is a step towards promoting Durga Puja on an international scale, following its recognition as an UNESCO intangible heritage event.
The event saw participation from foreign dignitaries, including those from Ireland and Thailand, highlighting the festival’s intricate artworks. Deputy Ambassador of Ireland, Raymond Mullen, commended the collaboration between Indian and Irish artists at Behala Notun Dal, celebrating 75 years of Indo-Irish relations through a joint pandal.
Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim emphasized Durga Puja’s evolution from a regional to a global festival, lauding efforts by massArt and other organizers. He also noted the festival’s economic impact and inclusivity, recognizing contributions from marginalized communities.
The massArt initiative provides a glimpse of Bengal’s celebrated art forms and includes guided tours for senior citizens, orphans, and specially-abled children. The Preview Show of Durga Puja Art will continue until October 4, featuring ambassadors from countries like Germany, Peru, and Cyprus, and a special exhibition at Town Hall showcasing the live art process.
