Breaking News: NIA Heroically Thwarts Potential Catastrophe, Recovers Live IED in North Lakhimpur District
Guwahati: NIA Recovers Live IED in Assam Ahead of Independence Day
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has located a live improvised explosive device (IED) in Assam’s North Lakhimpur district. The explosive, planted by the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), was part of a scheme to disrupt this year’s Independence Day celebrations. The NIA team discovered the device early on Tuesday.
The Assam Police bomb disposal squad successfully defused the device. The NIA uncovered the explosive during an inquiry into previously seized IEDs from North Lakhimpur on August 15.
An NIA statement disclosed that the ULFA-I chief, Paresh Baruah, had released a video calling for a “military” protest and a public boycott of Independence Day festivities, warning of severe repercussions for non-compliance.
The NIA assumed control of the investigation from Assam Police on September 17, 2024. The probe revealed ULFA(I)’s elaborate plan to plant explosive devices at multiple locations to incite terror and disrupt the Independence Day celebrations.
Further investigations indicated that Girish Baruah, known as Gautam Baruah, and his associates were pivotal in transporting and positioning the explosives in North Lakhimpur. Subsequently, Girish Baruah was apprehended in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on September 24. During interrogation, Baruah exposed the location of the live IED and affirmed that prominent ULFA (I) leader Aishang Asom, also known as Abhiit Gogoi, orchestrated the operation.
The NIA continues its rigorous investigation to dismantle the broader conspiracy and prevent further threats.
