Army Chief Debunks Rumors: No Evidence of 900 Anti-National Infiltrators from Manipur and Myanmar
Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi addressed the dual challenges faced by India, referencing ongoing conflicts in Manipur and Myanmar during his speech at the Chanakya Defence Dialogue, 2024. He lightheartedly remarked on the dual crises, stating “‘Ek ke saath ek free’,” indicating simultaneous issues in both regions.
Dwivedi traced the conflict in Manipur to a 2023 rumor about the burning of an Anglo-Kuki war centenary gate, which sparked significant violence. While the situation in Manipur is now stable, it remains tense with the society partly weaponized. He revealed that 60,000 people had been internally displaced but added that numbers have declined to below 40,000 due to persistent efforts. The looting of weapons and the emergence of women-led and underground defensive groups have further complicated the scenario.
The Army chief stressed the importance of a ‘whole of nation’ approach to resolve the conflict and restore trust within the community, mentioning the deployment of approximately 126 columns of Army and Assam Rifles in the state. He highlighted the need to counter false narratives, citing instances of misinformation about bomb drones and alleged infiltrations.
Dwivedi also touched upon the international ramifications, particularly with the influx of displaced people from Myanmar into Mizoram and Manipur. He affirmed India’s commitment to providing shelter and support to these unarmed individuals seeking refuge.
In conclusion, Dwivedi emphasized the ongoing efforts to recover weaponry, noting that around 25 percent of the total arms have been retrieved, along with numerous local weapons. He called for an end to the propagation of incorrect narratives that exacerbate the conflict and underscored the collaborative efforts required to achieve long-term stability in the region.
