Heartbreaking Tragedy: Over 100 Lives Lost in Israeli Strikes in Lebanon – Ministry Reports
Israeli Airstrikes in Lebanon Leave More Than 100 Dead and Hundreds Injured
Beirut, September 30 (IANS) – Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of at least 105 individuals and injuries to 359 others, reported the Lebanese Health Ministry. The highest casualties were reported in the South Governorate, where 48 people perished and 168 sustained injuries in Ain Al-Delb and Tyre.
The recent wave of violence follows an Israeli airstrike targeting Beirut’s densely populated southern suburbs on Friday, which killed Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Hezbollah. Hezbollah has been in intermittent cross-border conflict with Israel for nearly a year, primarily in support of Hamas militants in Gaza. Tensions escalated after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, igniting violence in the Palestinian territory.
Following Israel’s shift in focus from Gaza to Lebanon, the conflict has intensified, with hundreds of fatalities since last Monday, marking the deadliest period since Lebanon’s civil war from 1975 to 1990. Sunday’s airstrikes alone resulted in significant loss of life and damage, particularly in the main southern city of Sidon, and across the east, south, and areas surrounding Beirut. The Health Ministry highlighted severe damage to Kana hospital in the south due to the raids.
Eastern Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley, particularly Baalbek-Hermel, suffered significantly, with 33 deaths and 97 injuries. The southern Nabatiyeh Governorate, including the town of Marjaayoun, also reported heavy casualties.
Israel has justified its intensified strikes by targeting Hezbollah operatives and facilities, accusing the militant group of using civilians as "human shields." The airstrikes have not only flattened residential buildings but also severely damaged public infrastructure, exacerbating an already deepening humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.
As the conflict continues, Lebanon faces mounting challenges, from the escalating death toll to widespread destruction, highlighting the urgent need for international attention and intervention.
