Empowering Mangaluru: Heartwarming Walkathon Celebrations for World Heart Day
Massive Turnout for World Heart Day Walkathon in Mangaluru
In a vibrant celebration of World Heart Day, over 1,000 participants joined the walkathon, saree run, and marathon events in Mangaluru on Sunday, September 29. Organized by Kasturba Medical College in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association, the walkathon was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) B.P. Dinesh Kumar at 6.45 a.m. National athlete Ayush Devadiga, leading the march with a torch, set a spirited pace.
Participants, mostly in red t-shirts, chanted slogans like "Dil Ki Raksha Jeevan Ki Suraksha," "Be Strong Live Long," and "Let’s Walk the Beat." The walk took them past Hampankatta Circle and the IMA Mangaluru office, concluding at Marena Sports Complex by 7.15 a.m.
To cap off the event, the crowd formed a heart shape and released red balloons, symbolizing heart health. The KMC awarded prizes for the catchiest slogans and for excellence in ‘reel making,’ ‘e poster,’ and ‘cold cookery’ competitions. Special commendations were given to the most enthusiastic participants, including Vasudev Kamath of Mangalore Runners Club, who completed the walk barefoot, and Binoy Kumar Dubey from the Indian Coast Guard.
The event also featured a vibrant 3-km ‘Saree Walk n Run’ starting from Canara High School, Urwa, and a rigorous 5-km ‘Endurance Run’ organized by Atomm Fitness Club in Mannagudda, drawing a large number of athletic enthusiasts.
