Assam BJP Triumphs in Membership Drive: Himanta Biswa Sarma Celebrates Remarkable Lead Over Other States
The Assam BJP has significantly outpaced other state units in its membership drive, enrolling 53 lakh individuals, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Speaking after a review meeting at the state BJP headquarters, Sarma praised the success of the entirely online campaign, noting that the physical form fill-up will commence later.
“We have already registered 53 lakh members, achieving 85 percent of our state-set target and leading nationally,” Sarma stated. The membership goals are pegged at 75 percent of the BJP’s votes from the recent Lok Sabha elections. With 63.25 lakh votes and nine out of 14 seats secured in Assam, the state unit aimed to enroll 40,000 members in each of its 126 assembly constituencies. Sarma reported that this target has already been met in 71 constituencies, with expectations to exceed it in over 90 constituencies by October 9.
Dibrugarh district has seen the highest enrolment, while Sarma’s own Jalukbari constituency is the first to surpass the 1 lakh membership milestone. Meanwhile, Kokrajhar and Dhubri constituencies, along with parts of Diphu, lagged due to poor mobile network coverage.
Sarma emphasized the remarkable growth from 18 lakh members last year to 53 lakh, attributing this success to the diligent efforts of BJP leaders and their teams. After October 9, the membership drive will shift focus to physical sign-ups in areas suffering from inadequate mobile connectivity.
This development follows another political remark from Sarma, where he suggested that Rahul Gandhi should “stay home and watch cartoons.”
The surge in membership reflects the Assam BJP’s strategic and organizational strength as they prepare for upcoming political challenges.
