World Rabies Day Observed: DLZC Launches Powerful Initiative to Save Lives and Spread Hope
TAWANG, 28 Sep: The Tawang district surveillance unit, under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP-IHIP), marked World Rabies Day at the KDS District Hospital with the theme ‘Breaking Rabies Boundaries’ on Saturday. The event was notable for the establishment of a District Level Zoonotic Committee (DLZC) aimed at tackling zoonotic diseases.
Chaired by the deputy commissioner, the DLZC is a concerted effort to address and combat diseases that transfer between animals and humans within the district. The event, graced by DC (i/c) Sang Khandu, saw participation from various stakeholders including health and veterinary department doctors, District Agriculture Officer (DAO), forest department representatives, NGO members, nursing officers, and other health staff.
Dr. Sangey Thinley, the District Surveillance Officer, led a detailed presentation highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, immediate treatment, and preventive measures like pre- and post-exposure vaccinations to control rabies. He stressed that these actions are essential to managing the disease in the community.
Engagement from local NGOs was a key component of the event. Members of the Tangyum Tsokpa NGO, which focuses on animal protection and rights, pledged their support. They committed to working with local authorities to enhance public safety and prevent zoonotic diseases.
The deputy commissioner commended the healthcare workers for their unwavering dedication to raising public awareness about zoonotic diseases. He urged the department to convene DLZC meetings quarterly to ensure ongoing attention and updates on the matter.
Subsequent discussions featured insights from the senior veterinary officer and the range forest officer, both of whom underscored the critical need for robust measures against zoonotic diseases. The event thus set a proactive tone for community and inter-departmental collaboration in Tawang to tackle rabies and other zoonotic threats. (DIPRO)
